5 Days/ 4 Nights Tree Hotel (Aberdare) – Samburu Game Reserve – Meru National Park Safari from Nairobi takes you to explore Aberdare National Park – created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains. The Park has Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Black Leopard and the beautiful but elusive Bongo Antelope.
The other two lodges which our 5 Days/ 4 Nights safari uses as accommodation options are – Treetops Tree Lodge and Serena Mountain Tree Lodge which are built above the ground beside floodlit waterhole’s with salt licks.
Samburu National Reserve is one of the lesser-known national parks, but is nevertheless teeming with life. Situated alongside the Ewaso Nyiro River, there is plenty to attract wildlife from the surrounding savannah plains.
The reserve is rich in wildlife with an abundance of rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the beisa oryx (also referred to as Samburu Special Five).
Meru is a savanna National Park, 35 km east of Maua town in the north eastern lowlands below the Nyambeni hills. Wildlife include: Grevy’s zebra, elephant, eland, bush pig, common waterbuck, cheetah, leopard, reticulated giraffe, hippopotamus, bohor reedbuck, hartebeest, python, puff adder, cobra, buffalo, gerenuk and more than 300 recorded species of birds.

The name Samburu is of Maasai origin, a ‘samburr’ is a traditional leather bag the Masai use for carrying honey and milk. This region is characterized by vast, open landscapes, dried riverbeds (depending on the season of the year) and its red volcanic soil.
Rock outcroppings contrast against the dense woodland vegetation along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, the river that gives life to the reserve. The area is home to the Samburu tribe, who are ‘cousins’ to the Maasai people with their own distinct cultural traditions.
Arrive at the camp or lodge in time for lunch, followed by some leisure hours for a siesta or swim before you depart for an afternoon game viewing drive, and return back to the camp or lodge before sunset.

The park is plentiful with crocodiles that bask on muddy riverbanks and velvet monkeys that frolic in the late afternoon sun. Samburu is renowned for its rare species of fauna known as the ‘Samburu five’.
These five particular animals are usually only found north of the equator – the long necked gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe which is characterized by its liver-colored geometric patches defined by narrow white lines, the Grevy’s zebra which is smaller than the common zebra and looks more like a horse, the beisa Oryx with black horizontal stripe running across its lower flank and the Somali ostrich males which have blue-grey necks and thighs.
A camel-back safari is a specialty in Samburu, as well as a cultural visit to the Samburu people who depend on their cattle, goat, sheep and donkey can be arranged.

Meru National Park has a wide range of wildlife including elephant, hippopotamus, lion, leopard, cheetah, reticulated giraffe, and zebra. The bird life is also impressive and there are roughly 280 recorded species.
